    Abstract

This project seeks to determine whether social sustainability can be achieved in new settlements, focusing on the developments in Ebbsfleet Valley. It investigates the growing importance of social sustainability, in particular government initiatives through particular papers to achieve this social sustainability. It also investigates specific urban design ideas that are being put forward for incorporation into new settlements to ensure social sustainability. It was found that the public recognise the need for new housing but have many concerns as they don’t want the development of additional housing to take place near their own homes. They have concerns that, due to beliefs that the new settlements will not provide the appropriate levels of facilities and services to sustain the town, the new introduction of additional residents will overcrowd the existing surrounding towns.
