    Abstract

This study project will examine the progression and development of digital record labels, and how their gradual emergence has ultimately affected the music industry in the modern age. Research methods for this project will include a questionnaire to assist with gaining music consumers opinions, an interview with a music retail business owner to gain a perspective of the effects on music retail, and relevant academic research to support how the industry has been affected or disaffected by the various changes. The positive and negative aspects of both digital and traditional record labels will be investigated and the overall value of both formats will be analyzed. The project will conclude how the music industry has adapted to digital record labels and their methods of self sufficiency, how streaming and downloading networks have changed the relationship between record label and consumer, and how digital music has affected the success of music retail outlets.
