    Abstract

This dissertation seeks to explore the use of Section 136 of The Mental Health Act 2007 by police officers. The research takes the form of a literature review considering all the previous studies of the subject. Problems with the legislation are examined as well as the progress that has been made since the introduction of the legislation in 1983. The exploration is divided into three subjects which are the significant factors impacting on the day to day use of the power. Areas for future research are suggested in order to improve the current situation.
