    Abstract

    This dissertation study evaluates the extent to which the design of social housing contributes to crime volume in such areas. It reviews the measures that are already being used by industry professionals to design out crime and weights their level of influence, considers the extent to which social influences impact upon both crime levels and the success of design measures. It also evaluates the extent of success attained by design initiatives based upon Newman’s theory of defensible. Finally the effectiveness of guidance produced by the police designing out crime initiative SBD has been evaluated.
