This study researched the efficacy of the response of the police in Ireland in relation to cases of domestic violence. The emphasis of this research was on the response to cases where the victim is an adult female. While the initial proposal was to investigate the issues using the PULSE computer system only, interesting questions arose from the PULSE investigation, which prompted further research. This research entailed 119 semi-structured interviews with front line Gardaí with respect to their experiences of investigating cases of Domestic Violence. An evaluation of the answers given to carefully selected questions was undertaken. The research indicated a possible gap in the knowledge of the nature of Domestic Violence, and in aspects of the Garda Síochána policy, by the Garda members tasked with investigating such cases. Finally, the author conducted a telephone poll with fifty members of An Garda Síochána, in order to gain some insight into the gaps identified. The PULSE study indicated a considerable gap in the recorded PULSE data because of the manner in which domestic violence incidents are recorded on PULSE. The study discusses this gap in the context of the Garda policy in the manner of PULSE recording of Domestic Violence, and possible additional shortcomings created by a fivergence between policy, and the understanding required to implement the policy. In the concluding section, there is a discussion of how to address the gaps in the context of current government policy.
