    Abstract

Renewable energy implementation in the UK is needed with growing demand for energy and rapidly reducing levels of fossil fuels. The Severn Barrage is one proposal which could generate 5% of energy in the UK, and this dissertation evaluates the need for renewable energy sources and the potential environmental impact that a Severn Barrage could bring if constructed. Operating barrages in France and The Netherlands are investigated and contrasted along with the opinions of key stakeholders, through a questionnaire, to develop understanding to the likely environmental impact that could occur from a Severn Barrage construction. Interviews held with three key stakeholders further enhanced the view of a negative impact of a Severn Barrage which contradicts the research from other barrages. The report concludes with the Severn Estuary being a unique environment whereby comparisons are hard to make and the potential impact is still unknown with conflicting opinions and research.
