    Abstract

It is helpful to identify the multiple roles that theatres play which can be seen as ‘multiple personalities’. They are business, they are heritage assets and they are sophisticated working machines. It is the friction between these personalities which bring their own conflicting agendas and priorities combined with the oft-stated lack of funding to carry out major work that have caused the problems. In order to find a solution it is necessary to separate the conservation issues these buildings face from debates regarding securing funding. By developing strategies such as regular surveys, across the board conservation plans and upskilling the workforce it may be possible to ensure the long-term survival of these historic structures and, as a bi-product, make more powerful case for public funding.
