    Abstract

The Mental Health Act 1983 is the fundamental piece of legislation giving the power to detain people suffering from mental distress, at risk to themselves or others, in hospital. This dissertation explored the life long effects a ‘section’ under this Act can have on the lives of those detained. Findings for this Dissertation showed many oppressive outcomes. Research was also carried out on the discrimination and stigma patients experience in society today. All research for this dissertation was gathered as a literature review. The Act under went a number of amendments in 2007 and these were taken into consideration along with an exploration of current and pending mental health law to create a picture of the future for those suffering from mental distress. Conclusions were drawn from this research and recommendations for a direction of improvement, involving the proposal of a new Mental Health Act and the promotion of mental health education in schools.
