    Abstract

    The aim of this study was to explore social work practice in children’s services in the United Kingdom and if or how the social pedagogic approach could be used when working with children and families. A short presentation was conducted to professionals about social pedagogy, followed by a focus group which explored the views of ten social work professionals on social pedagogy. This focus group met once and a dictaphone was used to record their discussions. The main findings of this research was that social work professionals felt that social pedagogy cannot be entirely effective in the United Kingdom because of the structure and culture of society. This research also explored social work professionals’ views of their own practice at a time when social work has been under scrutiny. Recommendations arising from the research included raising awareness of social pedagogic practice in the United Kingdom, with further research regarding social work professionals’ views on social pedagogy and additional training. Fundamentally, it was recommended that social work professionals should have their voices heard, with their views acknowledged. In addition, the awareness and understanding of social work as a profession should be addressed.
