    Abstract

    Research into soap opera has increased so much in recent years, as those with a background in broadcasting and communications attempt to understand soap operas popularity with viewers. This dissertation focuses on contemporary soap operas EastEnders, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and their viewers. The first aim was to discuss the history of soap opera and its origin from America to UK, as well the move it made from radio to television. The second aim was to explore the history of soap opera as the woman's world and the changes that have happened over the years. The third aim was to discuss the conventions of British soap operas and other aspects of British soap operas such as social realism and stereotypes. The fourth aim was to discuss how the viewers engage and identify with soap operas, and how homophily and para-social interaction play a part in how the viewers identify with certain soap opera.

    This dissertation met the aforementioned aims through an extensive study of relevant literature. This research produced a number of key findings: changes in soap opera storylines and characters are some of the reason that it started to attract male and female viewers; the recognition of melodrama in British soap opera which also conforms to the social realism tradition; various different ways that soap opera viewers engage with the soap opera genre; and aspects of soap operas that allows for identification. The main conclusions drawn from this research were that so much has changed over the years in British soap opera as a genre and also its viewers.
