    Abstract

    The brand of Max Factor today is a worldwide label amongst the 21st century cosmetic industry, with has a familiarised advertising promotion as being the "make-up of make-up artists". This dissertation will essentially examine the origins of Max Factor and Company. Before the company was established the discourse of make-up had a long and colourful history. This dissertation shall firstly discuss an analysis of the history of make-up in order to understand how influential Max Factor was in legitimising the acceptability of make-up for women. It will then assess how Max Factor became a revolutionary pioneer of cosmetics within the entertainment industry. It shall pay particular focus on how the notion of glamour was associated with the promotion of Max Factor's products and how this developed the beauty culture industry of 1930s Hollywood.
