    Abstract

This dissertation identifies what effect the EU has on British sovereignty and how the Constitutional Treaty might change this. Using Economic and Monetary Union and Common Foreign and Security Policy as examples it argues that the EU does have a profound effect on the UK. However, this does not mean an impact on British sovereignty as the very notion of sovereignty is no longer relevant today. The Constitutional treaty, it is argued, bring changes of a technical nature rather than affecting the relationship regarding British sovereignty. The importance of economics as a base to other policy areas is also highlighted.
