    Abstract

Information systems (IS) have become a critical part in the successful running of organisations today. There is no dispute that without them organisations would not be able to cope and would surely fail. The success factors of information systems implementation has been widely documented in existing literature, however the documentation of challenges experienced by organisations seems to be rare. The following research report investigates the challenges that can be associated with information systems implementation with specific reference to a dairy company as a case study. Through a comprehensive review of the literature available, several factors affecting the implementation of information systems were identified and categorised into four areas - Human factors; Operational factors; Technical factors and Financial factors. Interviews were conducted with a number of employees of a local dairy company, currently in the process of implementing a new information system, in order to investigate what challenges they had encountered during implementation. An additional interview was also conducted with a software developer external to the organisation in order to gain a different perspective. The results of the investigation have shown that there are several common challenges that organisations can encounter and it is clear that human issues are the root of these challenges, with resistance to change being a major issue. The research proved that human factors present organisations with the biggest challenges during information system implementation. It is critical for organisations to identify these challenges and manage change appropriately or risk falling behind in an increasingly competitive industry.
