    Abstract

This research was an analysis of the relationship between age discrimination and the accessibility of mental health services for older adults with depression. The chosen methodology was a literature review. The writer systematically analysed primary research papers and policy and community knowledge, post the National Service Framework for Older People (Department of Health, 2001). The primary theoretical framework applied to underpin the research was Thompson’s Personal Cultural Structural model (2006).

The literature review found that older adults experienced age discrimination in many areas. There is a perception that depression is normal in later life, this ageist perception prevents healthcare professionals diagnosing depression in older adults. Furthermore cultural oppressions such as the stigma of depression prevented older adults seeking treatment. As a result of indirect age discrimination, no anti stigma campaigns were targeted at older adults. Structural discrimination evidences a disparity between the funding of mental health services for working age and older adults, which favours working age adults and further discriminates against older adults.

Recommendations made are; ageist perceptions to be consistently challenged, early intervention and integration prioritised, stigma campaigns to include and be targeted to older adults and for further research to identify the role of gender in age discrimination and depression.
