    Abstract

This dissertation is a literature review which examines the challenges facing the introduction of social pedagogy to children’s residential care in England. Firstly, pedagagogy is defined, followed by a description of how the review question and the aims and objectives of the review were decided. The methodology and mian findings are also described. These comprise the five main areas of challenge: government policy and regulations, cost of implementation, issues relating to the workforce, training and qualifications, and culture, society and values. The review discusses the limitations of the research, which included time, experience and resources. It also discusses what the author expected to find but which was missing from the literature. Practice implications of the findings are discussed. The implications depend upon the scale at which social pedagogy is adopted but it is argued that the implementation of social pedagogy could require significant policy change and re-organisation accompanied by heavy training expenditure. It would also be necessary to convince the workforce of the benefits of social pedagogy. Finally, this review recommends that experimentation in selected children’s homes continues over a longer period of time in order to gain more conclusive results. It also recommends that some training in social pedagogy is given to those working with looked after children. It argues that a long-term commitment to education and training, together with a change in policy and attitudes would be required. Lastly, it argues that there is a need to look at the wider context of welfare, poverty, class and culture within England.
