    Abstract

This study investigates different characteristics of beach sediments of the Hallsands, Beesands, Torcross and Slapton Sands barriers at Start Bay using a field based approach. Field data was collected between 5th September 2006 and the 10th September 2006. Pebble size, sorting, roundness, shape and lithology were investigated as well as beach profiles measured. Longshore and backshore patterns and relationships of the sediment characteristics were analysed and conclusions drawn from the results. The conclusions drawn include a reduction in sediment size from south to the north of the bay, and increase in rounding of pebbles in the same direction. The results indicated the importance of the Tinsey Head and Limpet Rocks headlands acting as natural groynes in the bay.
