    Abstract

This research project investigates the impacts of Gunwharf Quays on the adjacent, working class community of Portsea, to establish whether residents have benefited from recent change which is apparent in the region. Through the use of multiple methods of data collection, including questionnaires, interviews and focus groups, more attention has been paid to the impacts on the local Portsea residents. The project identifies themes and issues which have been experienced as a result of changing urban culture and the subsequent influx of new middle class populations into the region. Research findings indicate that the residents of Portsea have failed to share in the benefits and wealth created by its construction. In general it became apparent that the residents are not in favour of the construction of modern luxury housing developments which are unsympathetic of Portsea's working class roots whilst potentially widening divisions between social classes. Increased attention to physical appearance has failed to resolve deep routed issues, such as unemployment and lack of affordable housing, which are a prevailing characteristic of the environment.
