    Abstract

    The subject of parent choice is widely discussed in academic literature. However this study takes a less typical angle on the topic of schooling choice. Instead of focusing on the affect of choice on particular variables such as achievement (Gorard et al., 2003, p. 86), this study examines how choice is affected by economic processes. The relevance of this topic has come to a head recently with the introduction of a new school admission policy that is due to come into force in 2008, which aims to eliminate polarisation within the school system. The aim of the study is to analyse Census data and primary data to understand the affect of economic well-being on schooling choice within the case study area of Portsmouth. Analysis of this data suggests that the choice of schools available to children within Portsmouth is highly dependant on the family's economic well-being. The study is divided into five chapters. The first detailing previous literature on the topic of school choice that highlights the gap in the literature that this study has hopefully began to fill. The second chapter explains the aim and objectives in investigating schooling choice. The third chapter details the methodology used and the fourth chapter displays the results and analysis of each objective. The final chapter concludes all data obtained in the study and attempts to prove or disprove the study's hypothesis. The limitations and improvements of the study are included in this chapter.
