    Abstract

Naturalism in theatre is most closely linked to the theatrical movement that took place in 1890s Russia and the acting style that attempted to represent reality as accurately as possible, which was introduced by Konstantin Stanislavski throughout the era. Our use and understanding of the word 'naturalism' today differs and there have clearly been changes over the century. Is it naturalism that has changed or is it primarily society that has altered with naturalism merely reflecting this? How has society changed in a way that would alter the artform of naturalism and our viewing of it? What makes a play naturalistic and what ultimately detracts from the naturalism? All of these areas are carefully considered through a look at naturalism throughout history, a careful study of audience changes and a close look at some of the writing and theatre classed as naturalism today.Naturalism in theatre is most closely linked to the theatrical movement that took place in 1890s Russia and the acting style that attempted to represent reality as accurately as possible, which was introduced by Konstantin Stanislavski throughout the era.
