    Abstract

Between 1956 and 1964 a group of films emerged from France that immediately made an impact upon audiences and film communities around the world. The French New Wave surfaced at a time when French cinema was experiencing a period of hardship. Under the daunting pressure of Hollywood, an influx of American culture flooded Europe and with that came countless films. The films that were produced during the New Wave came as a reactionary measure, but are today considered some of the most influential films of all time. And it is the extent of this influence that constitutes the goal of this work. With the aim of demonstrating how this generation of filmmakers have influenced those of contemporary American cinema, I have analysed key films from each movement. The use of the film texts and countless secondary sources has provided me with an understanding of the technical, formal and narrative foundations of the French New Wave. This process was difficult as there is an abundance of literature focussed on the subject from which a few had to be selected to form the background of this dissertation. However, while academic research and journal articles are valuable sources, the film texts proved the most important in this work. In watching and comparing films from both generations, parallels were immediately evident and it is clear that the chain of influence from this small group of French directors has continued to resonate throughout cinematic history and is still as prominent today.
