    Abstract

This research project was carried out between November 2008 and April 2009 and investigated the what impact cultural differences between care worker and service user in older persons residential care had on delivery of care. The aim of the research was to establish whether cultural differences can place barriers between care worker and service user.

A literature review of relevant subject matter was carried out. This included looking at current issues older people face in residential care, what people made up the social care workforce, and relevance to social work practice.

The methodology used was a self-completing questionnaire sent out by post to thirty residential and nursing homes within the selected county. Simple random sampling was used to select the sample group.

The data was displayed with the use of tables, graphs and charts. The data was then analysed and discussed in relation to the literature review to establish whether the research could support or challenge the literature.

The research concluded that there is an ethnic and age diverse social care workforce which is significantly over represented by women and minority ethnic groups. There is also a rapidly aging older population which is again over represented by women and minority ethnic groups.

It was established that it perceived that cultural differences had more of an effect on emotional support than physical support. The main reasons given for impacts on care were language barriers and lack of understanding of cultural differences.
