    Abstract

    Purpose:
This literature review attempts to investigate services for adults that have a diagnosis of mental disorder and substance misuse issues. The writer has acknowledged that there has been previous research into the area but there still continues to be a lack of clarity around pathways to care. This controversial and contested subject has been high on political agendas in recent years; yet still social workers face confusion, lack of resources and inconsistency in how to support service users that have a dual diagnosis in many areas of the country.

    Method:
The writer has accessed a wide range of literature, data and available media sources during the review of the topic area. Four key themes have been identified: research and service user involvement, inequalities, current treatment provision and motivation and engagement. In addition, the literature review has been conducted with an international perspective including literature from the United States. There is continuous discussion throughout the literature review and an independent discussion chapter, which draws a number of conclusions.

    Results:
Many areas of practice have been explored and evaluated, for example the complexity of diagnosis and decision-making, organisational barriers to integrated working and international comparisons.
