    Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyse and investigate the role of grandparent carers parenting children of substance misusers, with the focus of investigating carer’s perceptions of feeling under-supported and undervalued.

This was undertaken as a literature review, where the Writer focused on research undertaken in the UK but also referred to research from the US. Service User comments were used throughout, enabling a critique of literature. Issues of finance, challenges and recommendations for change by way of social work intervention and Governmental policy were investigated, along with the positives of the caring role.

As well as individual chapter conclusions, a main conclusion summarised findings from research which proved that although progression is being made with regard to supporting grandparent carers, overall, this provision is slow to be implemented, confusing and often contentious. Further, the Writer discovered that changes to research, policy and funding are required to enable support for this invisible sector of carers.
