    Abstract

This essay discusses female empowerment in feminist stage plays between 1980-2014 by looking at three main topic areas: female representation and how taking on male identity can provide empowerment or not, separatist and lesbian feminist theory and whether presenting a women as homosexual makes her more independent and empowered than if she a presented a heterosexual, and whether male characters are important to include in feminist theatre. In exploring these topics I will be comparing and contrasting Cleansed (Kane, 200l), Nothing Compares To You (Lavery 1998), and Top Girls (Churchill, 1990) with my own creative artefact The Adventures of Tree Huggers (White, 2014).
