    Abstract

As a serving PCSO in West Mercia Police, I am aware of possible frustrations which can be experienced in relation to the limited powers and working hours available to PCSOs.
A survey was carried out with Police Community Support Officers in West Mercia Police (WMP) to gather their thoughts and views on the PCSO role and how it could be expanded or evolved. The survey was distributed to all PCSOs across the whole WMP force area. The results of the survey showed that the majority of PCSOs required more powers to enable them to do the job more effectively. The lack of career development within the role has shown to be a concern with almost 40% claiming this was a reason for which they had considered leaving the role. Also the majority of PCSOs want the option to be able to use their experience from this job to work towards becoming a PC.
