    Abstract

    This thesis explores the 1947 musical Allegro (1947) by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein as a proto-poststructural piece. It explains how it can be established as the first concept musical by highlighting the similarities between Merrily We Roll Along (l981), a concept musical, written by Stephen Sondheim. Poststructuralism, the philosophical movement opposing structuralism, contributes to this work, in particular Jacques Derrida's theory of deconstruction which I comment on being a musical theatre device to destabilise meaning throughout the performance.

    Each chapter compares Allegro in relation to other musical theatre pieces, highlighting the differences or similarities in style and format. From this, it identifies Allegro as a concept musical. The thematic metaphor is the focal point and has higher status than the plot, contextualised by all the features of Allegro that I highlight. This thesis also looks into the concept musical enclosing poststructural qualities, which results in the aim of the thesis being reached classifying Allegro as proto-poststructural.
