    Abstract

    This dissertation seeks to analyse the process that inserted Roald Dahl's original novel Matilda (1977) into a theatrical setting and the decisions behind the creators of Matilda the Musical (2010) that transformed the novel into a family theatre production. Observing Dennis Kelly, Tim Minchin and Matthew Warchus' artistic choices behind the adaptation, this dissertation will decipher the differences and comparisons between the stage production and the novel, alongside conceptualizing the appropriation of theatrical techniques used. It does so using Walter Benjamin's theory of 'The Death of the Aura' (2008) to frame the exploration of how the aura is affected through the trajectory of the adaptation, is it destroyed or merely different. Alongside Benjamin, this exploration will use Roland Barthes, Julie Sanders and Linda Hutcheon's theories to help develop the analysis and solidify the outcome.
    This consideration of the question has provided the answer that, throughout the process of adaptation from page to stage, changes were imperative to accommodate the story for the context of a theatre. These changes however, did not destruct the aura of the original, rather than disseminate a reworked and altered one. Similarly, the appropriation of theatrical technique encouraged the musical to broaden its audiences and allow, for the show, to be considered a 'family epic' within the world of theatre.
