    Abstract

The screenwriter/director/producer Christopher Nolan has created some of the most culturally significant films in recent history, each of which perpetuate similar themes throughout. The themes that this dissertation will focus on are identity, selfhood and the human psyche while attempting to apply to them to the theories and essays of the founder of modern psychoanalysis; Sigmund Freud. It is in considering the theories of Freud that the three films of Christopher Nolan studied in this dissertation were chosen. These are Memento (2000), The Prestige (2006) & Inception (2010), each of which will form a chapter of this study. These films span a decade of Nolan’s filmmaking career, the decade in which he came to be a widely regarded and critically acclaimed Hollywood filmmaker, also directing two of the rebooted and highly successful Batman films in this timeframe; Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008). Although a Hollywood filmmaker, Nolan still retains a sense of independence in his use of intellectual plotlines and characters. This study attempts to relate these plotlines and characters to Freudian theories in an attempt to establish Nolan’s films as being founded on psychoanalytical grounds through understanding works such as The Ego and the Id, The Interpretation of Dreams and The Uncanny.
