    Abstract

The aim of this dissertation was to identify the consequences of imprisonment and the extent to which these implications are effective in the lives of prisoners' families through the implementation of ethnography and a critical literature review. This ethnography was conducted in the Visitors Centre of a category B male sex offender's prison, by observing the experiences that prisoners' families face through their own personal narratives. Thematic analysis of the data revealed prisoners' families suffer extensively from particularly financial difficulties during the period of incarceration. It also highlights that despite the struggles the prisoner's family could have, there is still a high level of negative po1traya1, distrust and stigma placed upon these families from various platforms . Lastly, there is a unanimous feeling of gratification and appreciation towards the prison Visitors Centre and the volunteers . Although many other prison departments are portrayed by families as unhelpful, unorganised and require much improvement. As a result, this project considered the findings by suggesting several recommendations for future research and possibly future implementation of policy and practice.
