    Purpose – The aim of this study is to establish the extent to which Building Information Modelling (BIM) has already taken hold of the construction industry and whether the role of a Quantity Surveyor has already been forced to change and if not will it be changed in the near future.
    Definition - BIM is a technological process currently being implemented across the construction industry, involving building design on the computer rather than on paper drawings. A process involving digital representations of buildings and other structures, it is considered an evolution of CAD (Computer Aided Design), however one major difference is that BIM is a computer system underpinned by parametric technology systems, all elements are linked meaning design changes automatically update across all sections. (‘Building information modelling (BIM)’, 2016).
    Methodology/ approach – The primary research gathered was in the form of a questionnaire with 99 respondents from the Quantity surveying industry all of whom were members of RICS and 3 interviews with Quantity Surveyors working in 3 different sectors of the industry. Secondary research was in the form of a thorough literature review, reading through academic journals, books, websites, previous dissertations and all BIM related articles to give an understanding where BIM came from and exactly where it is heading in terms of the role of a Quantity Surveyor.
