    Abstract

    The project studied the conversion of a conventional jointed bridge into an integral portal frame bridge, particularly on the effects of external post-tensioning on the converted portal frame bridge. The literature reviews consisted discussions on integral bridge and prestressed concrete. Furthermore, literature review consisted the prediction on the design outcome, such as behaviour of the bridge after conversion and the possible effects of different prestressing method on the bridge model. Simple models have been made to identify the effects of different prestress method and the effects of eliminating the bridge joints on the bridge.
    Action research consist of documentary research and modelling is carried out to study aforementioned thinking. The results from the prototypes do not shows significant improvement and reduction in cost from this idea. Further study into effects of grade of concrete used for the bridge and the thermal effects on integral bridge would be able to carry this idea forward.
