This dissertation aims to understand the definitions and boundaries applicable to street photography in discourse concerning the 20th century as well as in contemporary discussions of the movement.
The methodology utilised in this paper is the comparative analysis of both definitions and debate concerning the characterisation of the street photograph in relation to its counterpart genres as well as the photographers who influenced trends and motifs in the overarching evolution of street photography.
The findings indicate that street photography discourse encompasses a wide range of definitions; these definitions are often undermined by other depictions and theoretical approaches to the street image. The street photograph in contemporary media is an accessible and adaptable genre of photography with a concern for the instantaneous and human afflicted.
