    This paper looks into the investigation of improving the energy efficiency of an educational building through the use of multiple simulations using IES (Integrated Environmental Solution) Virtual Environment computer software. With rising demand in energy, continued evidence of global warming and scarcity of resources it is becoming increasingly evident to make more efficient use of Energy in buildings. Literature review was carried out on how energy performance is measured in buildings and what has been achieved so far in UK buildings so far in improving energy efficiency.

    The four different simulation methods investigated in this paper are:

    1. Using temperature controlled sensors to control window openings and the HVAC systems at pre programme settings.

    2. Investigating the effect of triple glazing on the building.

    3. An analysis of how natural ventilation will affect comfort levels using adaptive control measures using BS EN 15251.

    4. How a major renewable technology (solar photovoltaics) can assist in improving the energy efficiency.

    Results showed the first simulation contributed the greatest saving, almost 10% in the buildings total energy consumption. However when greater detail was investigated into the advantages and disadvantages of each it was concluded solar photovoltaics would provide the most practical solution to an educational environment, with a similar saving close to 9%, with a positive Net Present Value (NPV) of £167,713.32.
