    Abstract

    The widespread adoption of social media by young people, especially students, and its integration in education has left a need to examine the extent of the positive impact on students’ academic performance. Furthermore, to ascertain the level of adoption in the academic sector as well as its usage level by students in their academic activities and pursuit. Driven by this need this study was carried out to investigate the positive impact of social media on students’ academic performance, using a case study of Portsmouth University students.
    The study’s findings indicated that there is a significant positive relationship between students’ academic performance and social media adoption and use. It also found out that social media has a significant positive impact on students’ academic performance. Finally, the study indicated that the level of student’s use of social media for academic purposes was low compared to social factors.
    Recommendations are that educational institutions should promote and encourage the use of social media for learning and also integrate their course contents into social media platforms. Students should use social media more in their studies and academic pursuit. Furthermore, the advice is that social media developers should also take into consideration the academic use purposes of social media during its design and development so as integrate elements of learning engagement and interaction, aiming to eliminate the distraction element, thus impacting students’ academic performance positively
