    Abstract

Hedgerows are an important aspect of our countryside, providing valuable habitats for wildlife and adding to the aesthetic quality of our rural landscapes. This makes hedgerows a well studied above ground phenomena, yet there is very little academic work into the effects of hedgerows on soil characteristics. This investigation looks at the effects of hedgerows upon the soil system, in particular the characteristics of particle size, organic matter, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and specific ions. This investigation uses primary data gathered from a site in Lambley, Nottinghamshire, which was subsequently analysed within a laboratory environment to investigate these characteristics. The results obtained were manipulated within a statistical analysis program, to produce evidence of patterns, many of which provided results that are contradictory to existing knowledge of soil processes. The impact of hedgerows upon the surrounding soil system appears to be overstated based upon the results of this investigation, however, this is not applicable to all situations and environments. These findings have important implications with regards to people wishing to remove hedgerows to provide extra land for the cultivation of crops.
