    Abstract

In the UK, alcohol misuse amongst older people is an increasingly growing issue for frontline NHS and social care services. In fact, it has been reported that 20% of men and I 0% of women over the age of 65 are exceeding the recommended drinking guidelines (Alcohol Research UK, 2011 ). This literature review therefore aims to explore this topic further by addressing the following question: What factors influence alcohol misuse amongst older people and what can be done to address this?
The author undertook a systematic qualitative literature review of academic journals and official reports published in the UK from the year 2000 to 2016. This review led to the author identifying three main themes which are addressed in this review; factors that influence alcohol misuse amongst older people, services available to older people and the barriers to accessing these services and lastly social workers' awareness of alcohol misuse in older people. The findings from this review have shown that there are many complex reasons that contribute to why an older person misuses alcohol. However, the theme of loss and life transitions seems to be consistent throughout the literature reviewed in this project. This review identified that there are some limitations to current services in place due to the lack of age-specific alcohol misuse services for older people. Additionally, there appears to be a general lack of practitioner awareness of the specific needs of this service user group. This literature review can be used to create greater awareness of alcohol misuse amongst older people and can help to inform social work practice.
