    Abstract

    Drawing upon a literature review of 7 journal articles, this dissertation discussed the experiences of looked after children and young people in relation to their participation in decision-making. The introductory chapter provided background information, relevant statistics, a legal and policy context, and the aims and objectives of the dissertation. The methodology used in the literature review, and the reasons for its choice in this project, were justified and explained. A thematic analysis was undertaken on the chosen literature following the development of a hierarchy of evidence and strict inclusion and exclusion criteria which aided the search strategy. A systematic search was conducted and a snowballing technique was used to collect the data.
    The findings of the experiences of the young people highlighted themes of significance for young people's experiences of participation in decision-making. These were the relationship with their worker, power play, and their identity. Through the evaluative models of both Arnstein and Hart's ladders of participation, the researcher analysed the findings to argue that the concepts of power and partnership have a dynamic relationship which forms the foundation of participation. The author developed a model of participation highlighting the ideas of power and partnership as central tenets of participation and therefore in need of focus prior to working towards participation for the young people. The researcher drew conclusions from these findings and analyses, and also provided a number of recommendations for further research into this area and implications for practice with looked after children and young people.
