    Abstract

    This dissertation is an investigation into super-hero play in the early years focussing on England; it explores the origins of what super-hero play is drawing on research into war, weapon and super-hero play as well as wider research around play itself. Although the investigation does suggest that super-hero play is banned due to a zero tolerance approach, some settings have implemented super-hero play strategies since earlier research into this and other forms of play, suggesting a need for a more detailed look into current early years’ settings. This draws on types of play such as role play and rough and tumble play whilst also linking to other areas of play such as mark making and construction. There is also some investigation from literature to suggest why this form of play is so popular for young children including a look into the psychological and physiological draws this may have for them. The benefits and challenges are then compared in relation to the current areas of learning and development of the EYFS in England, linking super-hero play to the three prime and four specific areas drawing on case studies presented in literature. This leads to a discussion around implementing effective strategies in settings linking not only to the frameworks but also the role of the practitioner and setting in facilitating super-hero play. Overall a positive link has been made between super-hero play and young children’s development however there is a lack of current widespread research to draw upon to form informed decisions, recommendations by the author suggest more primary research in a variety of settings to investigate this further particularly since the introduction of the EYFS onwards.
