    Abstract

    An exploration of sound effect libraries focusing on the issues faced when creating and distributing a sound effect library. The document will begin by examining the term 'sound design' in relation to its origins, meaning and development into the context of games with a particular focus on the science fiction genre. Techniques that have developed alongside the term 'sound design' will be discussed and the use of organic and synthesised sound in science fiction. Next the advantages and disadvantages of sound effect libraries will be looked at along with primary research into sound effect library preferences and existing sound libraries. Various marketing considerations will be discussed and how these are essential to a libraries success. The research will be supported through the creation of a prototype science fiction sound effect library, using the primary research to tailor the library to the users' preferences. Finally, a conclusion will be drawn as to what the key issues faced are when creating a sound effect library ready for distribution.
