    Abstract

This dissertation investigates the issues concerning the representation of women in Rock music. Throughout this dissertation a variety of areas and arguments have been considered, such as how women are represented in Rock music, whether their representation is lacking in ratio to male musicians and the negativity women face in Rock music by co-workers and consumers. It also discusses the negative media attention they can receive and unwanted sexualisation women receive from society and those they work with, including such people as their managers and photographers. Looking at contemporary and modern academic sources in the formats of documentaries, articles and books, combined with personal primary research that has been conducted, it can be suggested that there is significant under-representation of women in this genre of music. This can be seen in all aspects of this genre such as female musicians, studio engineers and producers and music journalists. This could be due to the culture of rock music being overly macho.
