    Abstract

Sound design is one of the most important factors in inducing fear in players of horror video games. This study explores the effectiveness of strategies that can be used by sound designers to induce fear in players of horror video games whilst providing a basic understanding of the psychology of fear. Through the use of primary and secondary research, a clear view of which strategies are most effective has been discovered. Firstly, psychology models of fear learning, the relationship between sound and fear, and the application of sound in horror video games are explored through literature. A consumer survey reviewing the impact of sound design on the induction of fear in horror video games is then conducted. After gaining insight from both academics and horror game consumers, the effectiveness of sound design strategies are compared and discussed, concluding that jump-scare effects are the most effective. However, a combination of jump-scare and suspense inducing techniques produce a more desirable and immersive horror video game experience for consumers.
