    Abstract

This project explores the processes undertaken by Global Radio stations, Capital FM and Heart to define their target demographics, whilst establishing how radio listeners are categorised. The study also attempts to correlate the opinions of industry practitioners with the ideology of the audience that their broadcasts seek to target. This project also establishes the process of branding a radio station to appeal to the ideals of a specific consumer, whilst discussing the notion of commercial radio stations effectively selling their audiences to advertisers. The results of the study identified elements of radio production that are essential to gaining and retaining listenership and also depicted the continuing role of radio within modern popular culture.
