    Abstract

Colchester Zoo is a popular visitor attraction situated in the South East of England attracting more than half a million visitors each year. As the structure of formal education is constantly adapted zoos are becoming ever more relied upon for providing an informal education learning experience that is accessible to all members of society. This paper focuses upon Colchester Zoo's efforts at trying to encourage environmental awareness through the use of species profile boards and other such informal learning activities to try and gain the visitors interest to learn about important environmental issues. Pre and post visitor questionnaires are used as a means of quantifying visitor knowledge for comparable purposes.
