    Abstract

This study set out to explore the feasibility of Police Staff Investigators transitioning from their role to the role of a warranted Detective Constable via a fast track programme. The methods used to explore this notion included examining current literature relating to Workforce Modernisation, the surveying of police officers, police staff and federation representatives from Hampshire Constabulary and a number of other police forces, the personal interviews of four senior police officers, including the Chief Constable of Hampshire Constabulary and the Chief Executive of the College of Policing and the aspiration and vision of the Home Secretary and the College of Policing with respect to policing in the 21st century.
The results of this study suggest that 74.62% of respondents believed there were advantages of fast tracking a Police Staff Investigator to the role of a warranted Detective Constable, there were little differences highlighted between the role of a Detective Constable and Police Staff Investigator within Hampshire Constabulary other than the ownership of serious crime investigations and there appears to be no current fast track programmes operating within the UK for Police Staff Investigators to transition to the role of a warranted Detective Constable.
This study concluded that it is feasible for a Police Staff Investigator to be fast tracked to the role of a warranted Detective Constable and recommends that Hampshire Constabulary introduce such a fast track programme.
