    Abstract

Imprisonment has variable impacts on both the offender and their family members. Whilst the pains of imprisonment is well understood and extensively researched, the families of those imprisoned have largely been overlooked and neglected in academic research. The aims of this study was to investigate the effects of imprisonment on families, ranging from financial, social, emotional and the effects upon children. The objectives included critically reviewing the current literature to examine the range of effects felt by these families and furthermore, to conduct primary research to uncover the effects experienced by families, in their own words.
