    Abstract

As a gay male, I have had contact and exposure to the BDSM scene, but only through observation and contact with other gay males. This has given me an insight into what I find a fascinating underground movement. My paper will look at the homosexual, but also the heterosexual, aspects, as gender definition, whether physical or mental, plays an important role. An individual's predilections and outlook will differ from person to person.
I will attempt to define today's meaning of BDSM through both primary and secondary research and in so doing aim to bring a current and refreshing viewpoint on a subject that rarely surfaces.
