    Abstract

The UK construction industry relies on the trades and tradesmen acquired during the procurement phase of preconstruction to produce work that represents the specification of the contract works, to be delivered within the timescale required and within the budget targeted by the Main Contractor to ensure maximum efficiency, productivity and return margin of the product whilst fulfilling the clients' expectation of the Works.
This study focuses on current practices within the construction industry, critically assessing the efficiency of systems in place and whether they are reflective of current methods of procurement.
