    Abstract

Car ownership is increasing and a greater number of people are continuing to use their cars later in life. Analysis undertaken in 2010 revealed that 62% of visitors and tourists travelled to Portsmouth by car, van or motorcycle which significantly contributes to congestion in the city centre (Portsmouth City Council, 2015). There is a high reliance on the car for short trips making it the predominant method of transit in Portsmouth. A proposed method of reducing the number of cars in urban areas is to replace long car trips with a combination of car and public transport.
