    Abstract

The aim of the study is to understand why staff and students at the University of Portsmouth may or may not be using the park and ride scheme in Portsmouth.

Objectives of the project in order to achieve the above aim are as follows:

    - To find numbers of staff and students using park and ride scheme at different times of the day and week.
    - To record the range of reasons why staff and students might not use the park and ride scheme.

These objectives were achieved by conducting a survey at the park & ride site in order to collect data on staff and students usage of Park & Ride scheme and also a focus group was conducted in order to help understand the deterrents for these staff and student for using the scheme.

Using these methodologies and some analysis it has been deduced that around 24 members of the university community use the park & ride service daily, equating to just under 1% of staff and students travelling to University from outside of Portsea Island. The deterrents found were members of the university community not using the scheme are the price of the service, the time the service takes, the positioning of the service site, the number stops the service provides, the timetabling of the service, the options of other public transport and finally the lack of incentives for the use of the service. The most important of these deterrents to the staff and students being the costs of both money and time for using the service.

Further work may look into whether or not making the service cheaper and less time consuming, would actually increase usage by staff and students at the University of Portsmouth.
