This dissertation explores the issues associated with mature students studying at university.
The three main issues examined are cost, time, and status. They were researched using two qualitative methods; a questionnaire, for gathering data related to mature student and a semi structured interview; which were conducted with University lecturers, to provide data for discussion.
The literature review suggested that mature students are perceived to struggle with the cost of attending University, finding enough time to complete University work and lack confidence about the work they produced for their lecturers.
The results from the questionnaires seem to suggest that the issues associated with being mature students are similar to those found in the associated literature. Although there were also some discrepancies from the literature which related around the reason mature students enrolled. The data also suggested a tipping point that all the students had reached before enrolling. At some point before enrolment some unique reason or need motivated them. This tipping point or need in most cases was to improve themselves. The tipping point was reached when the mature student realised that in order to advance they needed to overcome their anxiety about entering University. This was also noted in the literature, proposing a link between a need and overcoming any anxiety relating to the concerned issues.
